Bluesky Tips and Tricks: Change your handle + get your custom domain verified automagically 🦋
Bluesky is an awesome new social network app and an open platform, that through a decentralized At-Proto protocol, moderation, and algorithmic choice is going to revolutionize the public conversation. Simply put, it is what we really wanted Twitter/FB/IG/Mastodon to be, but unfortunately they never delivered. Bluesky is awesome and people love using it.
I enjoy using Bluesky and want to share a few tips and tricks I learned along the way. One of the most common questions I get asked is “How do I change my handle?” and “how did you get the custom handle?”

If you visit my account you will notice that I use the custom handle amir.blue.
You can do that too for any domain you own! Here is how to do that:
- Head on to the Setting window, by clicking on your account image in the main view, and then hit Settings.
Next you will see a lot of useful settings, we will focus on the “Change my handle” setting.
You will land on a page that lets you change your handle. If you just want to fix/change/rename your handle you are in the right place:
If you do not own a domain, or do not want to set a verified custom domain, just make the changes, save and you are done. You might want to listen to this song as I always think about it when I see the “@ eg alice”.
Now if you decided to take the red pill and continue to custom domains press the “I have my own domain” link. You will be taken to instructions on how to verify your domain:
You will then need to go to your domain register / DNS provider and set this TXT entry. This is how it looks on my interface in Google domains.
Once you added the TXT entry hit Verify DNS Record (you might have to wait, some DNSs take time to propagate).
And you are done. You are verified, you have your own custom handle. You do not need to pay anyone $8, so treat yourself to a cup of coffee or donate it to your favorite charity 🦋
